EUCAST’s unheralded, but vital work, is helping to ensure responsible use by defining common standards for antimicrobial resistance globally

The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (ESCMID) – an organisation that pursues science, explores risk assessment, knowledge sharing and best practices in the fight against infectious disease – is currently researching the new critical breakpoints for antimicrobial agents in clinical development through its European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). The group is highly respected amongst the world’s leading experts, but is relatively unknown amongst healthcare communities and the general public.

Jim O’Neills Review on Antimicrobial Resistance launches their third interim report. Amongst the report’s recommendations is the creation of a $2 billion global fund to be spent over five years to assist organisations pay for their R&D on developing new antibiotics. Grants will be awarded from this fund, which will delink the reward side of antibiotic drug development from sales and should incentivise organisations to get back into the antibiotic development space. Global fund monies will be used to finance blue skies research into new antibiotics and diagnostics and encourage innovative partnerships at early development stages between academia and industry.

This year’s event sees the European society exploring vaccines as a possible solution in the global, cross-border fight against antimicrobial resistance.

At the start of the new European Commission’s first full year of operation, the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) has issued a call to EU policy makers to make 2015 a year of action in meeting the antimicrobial resistance challenge.
