Non-surgery heart treatment hailed

teaser

A new method of treating heart failure without the need for surgery has been found to help patients recover more quickly than conventional drug treatments, the makers have said.

The Cancion system, which is administered through a needle without ever touching the heart, was found to increase the blood flow in a patient`s aorta during a study of patients admitted to hospital with heart failure.

Those treated with the system on top of drugs recovered better than those given drugs alone, a meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago has been told.

Some 106,500 people were admitted to hospital with heart failure during 2005/6 in England, according to statistics from the Department of Health.

Dr Barry Greenberg, of the University of California, ran the trial for Orqis Medical and said: “While the MOMENTUM Trial did not meet its primary composite efficacy endpoint, it is a landmark study demonstrating that the Cancion System, in combination with conventional medical (drug) treatment, statistically significantly improved cardiac performance compared with drug treatment alone.”

“There has been very little progress in identifying effective new approaches for treating patients with decompensated heart failure and the Cancion System provides physicians with a needed new treatment option.”
